Fast Company caught up with StreetLight CEO Laura Schewel to discuss the U.S. Transportation Climate Impact Index and the many conclusions that can be drawn from the data. In all, Schewel said the report can better shape cities’ understanding of their unique needs to reach sustainable transportation goals.
“A walkable downtown doesn’t mean an area is sustainable, especially if housing is expensive and most people have to live far away.”
Transportation sustainability may be a common goal in U.S. cities, but there’s not a “one-size-fits-all” approach to greening a city’s transport system.
“For some cities, more bike lanes are the answer,” said Schewel. “For some cities, it’s about urban planning, so that you don’t have to drive 18 miles to get to the grocery store. And for a lot of cities, it’s thinking about their housing costs, so people can afford to live near their work.”
