Transportation Data Reveals the 100 Greenest Metro Areas in the US

A recent GovLoop article broke down the many factors that impact StreetLight Data’s 2020 U.S. Transportation Climate Impact Index—a ranking that looks vastly different from its 2019 version, considering how the COVID-19 pandemic altered transportation activity.

From a population density rank (number of residents per square mile) to a VMT rank (vehicle miles traveled per capita), each factor represents a unique dataset that influences a city’s overall climate goals, GovLoop reports.

“Given the potential for decoupling economic growth from VMT, now is the time to create more financial and other incentives for reducing climate impact.”

The article also assessed how the growing remote work trend played a role in StreetLight’s 2020 Index, which suggests that a widespread one-day-a-week work-from-home policy could reduce commute VMT by 20%.
